We have started our Africa Unit!
Today we watched The Lion King and listened for certain words that we will be learning more about. (Jambo=Hello, Asanta Sana=Thank You, Simba= Lion)

Day 1: The students hear the story Battle Between the Birds and the Beasts by Frances Carpenter. After listening to the beginning of the story we stop and predict who will win. Ask your student who they thought would win and who ended up winning. Students also create a picture showing their favorite part of the story.

Day 2: The students hear the story moja means one by Muriel & Tom Feelings
This story introduces the students to the numbers 1-5 in Swahili. We will practice saying numbers 1-5. See if your student remembers them!
Here is a cheat sheet with pronunciation help for parents:
1: mo*jah
2: m*bee*lee
3: ta*too
4: n*nay
5: tah*no

Day 3: The students will listen to Africa's Animal Giants by Jane McCauley and create an African Animal collage.

Day 4: The students will listen to Little Bull by Ellen Foley James and complete a series of three elephant activities that include writing, counting and reading.

Day 5: The students will listen to For You are A Kenyan Child by Kelly Cunnane and Ana Juan. We will talk about the Masai tribe in Kenya and look at some cultural aspects such as their armor. The students will get a chance to see a real Masai shield and design one of their own.
